Birmingham Radio Theatre Company
Audio Theatre Workshop 2001

The Birmingham Radio Theatre Company held a one-day workshop on producing radio / audio drama on June 14, hosted by Miriam Hipp of the Company. The focus of the workshop was on the use of audio drama by teachers as an economical method for teaching writing and other creative skills in a period of declining budgets. Audio productions also allow students to concentrate on character development instead of on memorizing lines or stage-blocking.

Guest instructors were Thomas E. Fuller, Head Writer for the Atlanta Radio Theatre Company, and Henry Howard, Audio Producer of ARTC.

A highlight of the workshop was a half-hour teleconference with OTR great, Norman Corwin.

Topics covered included:

* A Brief History of Radio Theatre -- From Old-Time Radio to Modern Audio Drama
* Writing Radio Drama
* Developing Material for Radio Theatre -- Re-creations, Original Scripts, and Rights
* Sound Effects for Radio Theatre
* Microphone Selection and Technique
* Production Organization of the Radio Theatre

There was also a display of vintage radio equipment provided by the Alabama Antique Radio Society. For information about future events, call 205/324-0684 between 9:00 am to 6:00 pm CST or contact us by e-mail at radthea@bellsouth.net
